final exam part 2

First Story

Yesterday at 2am, meteorologists at Nadi Weather Centre detected a rapidly developing cyclone out near Nauru. Quickly developing out in the south-west across from the Pacific, heading out towards the Solomon Islands.

"It was a fast developing front that we could not have anticipated any faster." said the Nadi Weather Centre.

The cyclones name was Victor. At around 3am the Solomon Islands government, put out a warning to the public of the quickly approaching cyclone. The government officials had to immediately put emergency plans into action.  The shipping in the area was warned about the cyclone.

Police were sent out to go and warn the towns people. The Police chief Marianna Adams said " it could have been worse, but the emergency shelters established three years ago after Hurricane Kilo gave our people a place to hide. "

Winds in Honiara were blowing at 140 kilometers per hour at around 10pm.  When it was about midday, the centre of the Victor went passed directly over Honiara before tracking itself into the coral sea, where it blew itself out.  In Honiara more than 20 houses were destroyed and many buildings were able to sustain considerable structural damage. 100 people are homeless, 6 people were killed, and another 18 were injured.

"The church is open to anyone who has lost their home and needs a place to stay for awhile." said Pastor Harold Young

Operations were being mopped up in Honiara. Emergency services are still awaiting more news from outlying districts, but do believe in Honiara was the most affected by the cyclone.  Police are now saying that of the six people who died, three of them were men who drowned, when the wind blew them and the car off the street and into the water. Then two women and a man were killed by flying debris.

"It was pretty chaotic for a few hours there when the storm hit the community." said Police Chief Marianna Adams

Lisa Ramos, mother of one of the men that was killed said " he was returning home from a vacation in Australia when the storm hit, his name was Frank. We are devastated that we lost our son."
